Why you shouldn’t use AI to design your branding
Recently, a client asked whether they could simply use ChatGPT to generate a logo instead of investing in professional design.
They were looking for a rebrand and needed to update their fleet of vans with some new branding and asked: Why pay for a logo when AI can generate one for free?
It's a fair question, we all like to cut costs wherever possible, and if they could save money, they should. Right?
Initially they asked us to design the rebrand but after playing around with ChatGPT, they had something they felt could do the job and cancelled the rebrand project with us.
However, the result that AI generated was good, but not great: a low res JPG when in the real world they would need a vector, as a low res JPG can't scale without losing quality and that would simply not work on the side of a van.
Using AI for branding can lead to generic, unoriginal designs that lack the human touch and strategic thinking needed to create a meaningful brand identity. AI-generated logos may also have legal issues, such as copyright infringement or lack of trademark protection, and they often don't translate well to different uses like printing or embroidery.
Additionally, AI may not capture the unique personality and story of your business, which is crucial for building a strong connection with your audience.
The Risks of Using AI for Branding
Lacking Originality
- AI-generated designs often rely on pre-existing templates and images.
- This can result in logos that look similar to others.
- Unique branding is essential for standing out in a competitive market.
The Absence of a Human Touch
- Branding requires emotional connection and storytelling, which AI cannot replicate.
- Human designers incorporate personal experiences and psychological insights to create designs that resonate with their clients' target audiences.
- AI lacks the ability to understand your brand's unique mission and values.
Legal Concerns
- AI tools may use copyrighted or trademarked elements, leading to potential legal issues.
- Many AI-generated logos do not qualify for trademark protection, so that anyone could use the same design.
- Ownership rights can be unclear, which can risk your brand's identity and integrity.
Design Limitations
- AI-generated logos may not be suitable for various applications, such as printing or embroidery.
- They often produce low resolution files that lack the necessary flexibility for different formats.
- Intricate details in AI designs can complicate reproduction on merchandise and are generally inadvisable in creating a strong brand presence.
Missed Strategic Insights
- A good logo is rooted in strategy, considering your market, which a human designer will always bear in mind.
- AI cannot ask clarifying questions or explore concepts, which are crucial for effective design.
- Without strategic thinking, branding may lack meaning and fail to endure over time.
Investing in professional branding ensures a unique, meaningful identity that resonates with your audience and stands the test of time.
AI Is a Tool. Your Brand Still Needs a Strategy.
AI is an incredible tool when applied thoughtfully. But brand identity still requires human judgement, strategic thinking and technical execution. AI doesn't care about your business, your brand, your values or your audience. A human designer does.
If your business is serious about growth, credibility, and long-term value, your branding deserves professional care. What looks like saving money often multiplies downstream costs. However, AI can be useful in the branding process — when used correctly.
How to Use AI Successfully in Branding
- Exploration and inspiration (building mood boards, for instance)
- Colour palette experimentation
- Brand naming exploration and experimentation
- Drafting your message
- Competitor research
- Brainstorming.
Here’s what it should NOT be responsible for:
- Final logo, brand design or brand guidelines
- Vector production files (these are most important if you are having anything printed, signage or vehicle graphics)
- Print-ready files
- Legal ownership
- Long-term brand strategy.
Our business uses AI as a tool, to streamline workflows or to build systems that help businesses operate more efficiently. We don't use it as a replacement for creative expertise. We like to get our hands dirty, really delve into a client's business and find ways of helping them to grow, because we care about our clients and their businesses.
The same goes for website design. Yes, AI can build you a website for a very low cost, but the risk to your business is the same. AI-generated websites lack the creativity that human-designed websites have, and most likely you will end up with something that looks very similar to everyone else's.
Finally, as a small business, we subscribe to the "Giver's Gain" philosophy: if you give business to me, I'll give business to you. If you are trying to replace a human being with AI, who has bills to pay and needs to work in order to pay other businesses, don't be despondent if they find a way to replace you. Now there's a cheery thought!
If you’d like guidance on creating a visual brand or brand strategy that actually works — and speak to a human — we’re happy to talk!
